Despite global climate goals, the steel industry—which accounts for about 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions—is still expanding its carbon-intensive production methods.
Major steel producers like India and China continue to accelerate the development of new high-emitting blast furnace capacity, a coal-based technology that emits far more than cleaner alternatives. Cleaner electric arc furnaces (EAFs) are growing, but not fast enough to offset the surge in traditional methods.
India alone is building 57% of all new coal-based blast furnace capacity, making it the largest source of future high-emission steel production.
Ironically, that puts India in a pivotal position. The next step it takes—whether to double down on coal or pivot to green tech—will set the tone for the entire global industry.
The world is watching. And India has the opportunity to lead the steel decarbonization revolution. (Reuters, May 20, 2025)
